5 Ways to Protect Your iPhone and Other Apple Devices

Apple devices embody a trick combination of properties: being both very expensive and very vulnerable to damage. The screens and cases of their mobile devices while designed to provide some protection do unfortunately break quite frequently. Additionally their premium value of Apple’s products make them vulnerable to theft too. Here are 5 top tips to avoid or lessen the heartbreak of being parted with your Apple device. These largely apply to mobile devices but can be applied to your desktop computer too.

Things to Check when Buying Used iPhone

Since the launch of the first iPhone back in 2007, iPhone has become one of the best selling smartphone ever. It has a huge fan following and is a dream phone for many. The secret behind iPhone's success is its simple but sexy design, mind blowing features and amazing music quality. I've been an iPhone user for 3 years and have used almost all iPhone's models (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3Gs, 4, 4s). For me iPhone is one the best phones I've ever used but not anymore as I've moved to Android with Galaxy S3. Let's not talk about that today and save it for a follow up post.

Google Nexus 10 VS Apple iPad : Why Choose Nexus 10 over iPad?

The hot commodity in the tech world right now is definitely tablet computers. Apple's iPad pioneered this category with its launch several years ago, but since that time every other major operating system has made a foray into the tablet market. As smartphones have become increasingly popular, they have approached market saturation. Now tech companies are racing to get their tablets into the hands of consumers, and there is lot of growth in this market as a result.

The Competition

Despite Microsoft's attempt at a tablet operating system with Windows 8, Apple's iOS and Google's Android remain the dominant players in the market. Apple's iOS is only available on the iPad. Though they offer several different models, including the iPad mini, most iPads are fairly similar. Android, on the other hand, is run on tablets produced by a variety of manufacturers. At the top of the line are the Nexus products, where Google works closely with the manufacturers to design tablets they specifically approve of. The Nexus line of products are specifically designed to run Android very well. They also get updates very quickly, while some manufacturers leave their hardware on older versions of Android for a while.

Which is Better?

So which one is better? Both are the top of the line within their own respective categories. The iPad costs a little more for similar hardware, so the budget conscious user might prefer the Nexus 10. Apple's iPad boosts their highly-touted Retina display. While Google hasn't focused on the Nexus's screen as a major advantage, it actually has a higher resolution per inch and overall than the iPad.

google nexus 10 vs apple ipad

Perhaps the biggest difference between the two is the software. Apple's iOS has had a bit more time than their competitors to build up a large repository of apps. Although most major apps are available cross-platform, iOS still has a few apps that Android doesn't yet have. That being said, Android also has apps that aren't available on iOS for various reasons.

google nexus 10 vs apple ipad

If you don't yet have a mobile computing device, then you might not know which apps you do or don't want. For people who are looking for specific functionality in their tablets, however, the choice of operating systems can be very important. Also, some users just find it more convenient to stick to something they're comfortable with, so iPhone or Apple computer users might find it more convenient to buy an iPad, and people with an Android phone might want to get a Nexus 10.

Conclusion

Google's Android platform is a more open system for app developers, which encourages creativity and innovation. This is perhaps the biggest single advantage of the Android platform.

Apple is known for their beautiful hardware design and easy to use products. While this still holds true for the iPad, the Android platform has caught up so much that Apple's iPad doesn't offer as much of an advantage as it used to. With the Nexus being slightly cheaper and not really having any disadvantages, why not choose it? The Nexus 10 and iPad are both great products, but the Nexus 10 has a slight lead.

10 Reasons Why iPhone Sucks

Apple iPhone's are one of the Top selling smartphones with millions of users worldwide. The Popularity of iPhone's is growing year by year and more users are switching to it But is iPhone really worth? Well we can't say that, It actually depends on the user and his requirements. I mean a Heavy user will find iPhone 'a piece of crap' as it has many limitations Hardware wise (as compared to other smartphones with same price tag), On the other hand it can be a boon for users who just use smartphone for Music, Movies, Browsing etc. So it actually depends on your needs; If Hardware, Features, Customizations means a lot for you then Simply go for Android, iPhone is not made for you.

How To Fix Home Button Delays On IOS Devices

The home button on iOS devices is made for multipurpose use and most of the time you need it to respond click-fast. Given its multi-function roles: closing an app, returning to home screen, etc, after some time, you may notice that the home button produces a delayed response to clicks, refusing to work as fast as it did when your device was first activated.
iOS home button delays
In this quick tip, we will share 2 different ways that you can try to maintain your home button performance. We’re going to use the iPad as examples but take note that the methods work for the iPhone and the iPod Touch as well.

1. Reboot IPad

To reboot your iOS, press the switch button at the top right side of your device until a red button appears on the screen, then slide the red button to the right, to power off your device.
power off ipad
Press the switch button again to start up your device. This process should reboot the whole device system and fix your home button screen delay.

2. Calibrate Home Button

The other option or ‘trick’ you can do is to calibrate your home button. This action will require interaction with some applications like Calendar, Youtube and Weather. What you should do now is to open any of the mentioned app, and press the switch button until the red slider appears. Once it appears, long press your home button until the red slider disappears.

When the slider disappears, your iOS’s home button is now calibrated.

How To Transfer IOS Screenshots To Your Mac Easily

If you love taking a lot of photos and screenshots with your iPhones or iPad, I bet you hate the transferring of the photos part. Cable transfer and Dropbox sync… while they work for a few shots, transferring photos in bulk would be a definite headache or at the very least, super time-consuming.
iOS Screenshot
Skipping the unnecessary, since you now have iCloud, why can’t every photo and screenshot captured on your iOS devices appear automatically on your Mac? Well actually, it can.
In this quick guide, you will find out how you can access photos and screenshots saved on your iOS, directly on your Mac without doing anything. This little trick utilize Photo Stream on iCloud making your files appear on your Mac without third-party apps.

Get IOS Screenshots Automatically On Mac

Since we will be using iCloud, make sure you have registered for an account and have Photo Stream set ON.

1. Use Photo Stream On IOS And Mac

To set Photo Stream on your Mac, go to System Preference > iCloud and make sure Photo Stream is ‘checked’.
Photo Stream Mac
On your iOS, you can go to Settings > Photos and set Photo Stream to ‘ON’.

2. Locate Photo Stream Folder In Mac

When your Photo Stream is active, iCloud will automatically sync all your files and photos. Since Photo Stream on your Mac is now on active mode, all saved screenshots and photos on your iOS device will sync automatically to your Mac in a hidden folder. To access these files, follow these simple steps;
  1. Hover your mouse over Finder on the Dock, option-click and select ‘Go to Folder’.
    Go
  2. In the search bar, look of ~/Library/ and hit ‘Go’.
    Go to Folder
  3. When the hidden Library folder is open, navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets > sub then in the field, type ‘png’ and select ‘Portable Network Graphic Image’ from the popup.
    Sub PNG
  4. Now hit the save button.
    Save
  5. When a popup appear, name the folder as ‘Photo Stream’ or ‘screenshot’ or anything so you can remember. Leave the ‘Add To Sidebar’ option checked and click ‘Save’.
    Add to Sidebar

Conclusion

When it’s all set, you can easily make a screenshot and take photos with your iPad or iPhone, and access those images from your Mac right away!

From Android To IOS: 10 Most-Asked Questions

iOS and Android are two distinct mobile operating systems. Those who like to play with new operating systems and customize their phone rather than let the phone manufacturer call all the shots may prefer Android. Those who prefer a more stable, simpler and user-friendly mobile OS may prefer iOS.

If you were an Android user and is now switching to iOS instead, this is the post for you. Here are 10 questions that you might think of asking and the quick answers to those concerns. If you are new to the world of smartphones and you want to try iOS first, you might also be able to learn a new thing or two here.

1. Syncing Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Android is hassle free with it came with syncing mail, contacts and calendars as it was managed with a Google account. It is similar to the iPhone as all you have to do is log in to your Google Account twice through a few settings. Read all about how to do it here.
Mail Settings

2. Transferring Existing Photos To IPhone

Transferring any sort of media to your Android device was as easy as transferring something to a portable flash drive, however with the iPhone it is slightly more challenging as you have todownload and install iTunes to sync music and pictures.
The first step of transferring your Android pictures, videos and music files to your iPhone would be to transfer them to your desktop PC via USB cable or wireless with an app like AirDroid.
Once it’s there, you’ll have to launch iTunes to transfer all of it to your iPhone.
iTunes
Using the new iTunes 11 is not that hard; syncing music is merely a drag-and-drop action of songs from your iTunes library on your computer to your device.
iTunes Music
As for pictures, you’ll have to click on your device on iTunes and select the Photos tab. Check ‘Sync Photos from’ and select the folder with all the pictures you want synced to your device. You can choose to select the entire folder of pictures with subfolders or just select a few subfolders.
iTunes Pictures

3. Sharing Photos/Files With Android Users

The iPhone is not friendly with other mobile platforms, so sharing email attachments, photos or music files can be a pain. The best way to do it is to use Bump.
Bump allows you to share contacts, email attachments, photos, videos and even music files. It also works cross-platform which means you can share files with Android users if they have theAndroid version of Bump.

4. Backup & Restore IPhone Data

The good thing about the iPhone is that with iTunes, you can securely backup your iPhone data to your computer and to iCloud. We suggest you backup with both methods and with our complete guide, you can do it properly without hassle.
Backup

5. Syncing Browser Bookmarks

On any iDevice, our number one choice for web browsing would be Google Chrome as it has much more features than the pre-installed Safari.
Google Chrome
Good news is, if you use Google Chrome on your desktop and previous Android device, all your bookmarks and history will be synced to Google Chrome on your iPhone as well. It will automatically sync once you’ve signed in with your Gmail account.

6. IPhone Security – Finding Missing IDevice

When you first set up your iDevice, there is the option to enable the Find My iPhone app by Apple. The app lets you locate your iDevice including your MacBook on a map, remotely lock your device, erase all data on it, or display a personalized message on the device.
Find My iPhone App
Aside from this app, there are other apps you can download on your device that can help you find your missing iDevice.

7. Customize Ringtones

Using custom ringtones on the iPhone is not easy as you have to go through iTunes (again) and there is a unique ringtone file format that you have to use. Moreover, you cannot use custom notification sounds for individual apps unlike in Android. To customize your iPhone’s ringtone or SMS tone, check our previous article for complete instructions.

8. Battery Life – What You Need To Know

If you’re coming from Android, chances are you could’ve used your device throughout your day with messaging, social networking, web surfing and occasional calls. However, you should know that the iPhone does not have the greatest battery life.
Low Battery
However, there are a few common ways to conserve battery power like disabling auto brightnessand using a lower brightness setting, using less 3G and more Wi-Fi as 3G/LTE drains the battery really quickly and of course turning off Locations, Bluetooth and 3G/Wi-Fi when not in active use.
Settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Brightness can be found on the first page of Settings. As for 3G settings, it’s under Settings > General > Cellular.
Settings

9. Cables & Connectivity

If you previously own an Android device, getting the charging cable is as easy as going to any electronic store. The MicroUSB cable is used for digital cameras, cellphones and MP3 players, as by the top 14 mobile phone manufacturers in the world. But not Apple. You can only get the charging cable from Apple stores.
Lightning Port
So, you’ll probably have to bring your Lightning cable around or buy an Apple Lightning cable converter to charge your iPhone 5 or iPad Mini (with help from older charging cables) or connect to previously owned 30-pin accessories.
There are also very few speaker docks from other manufacturers that support the Lightning cable since the old 30-pin connector supported every iDevice like the iPods, iPad and iPhone.

10. Troubleshooting & More

In this final section, we’ll cover basic but essential things to help you fully utilize and enjoy your iPhone.

How To Enable Lockscreen Security

Unlike Android’s many ways to unlock your phone, iOS has only 2 ways to secure your device. You might see more people using 4-digit passcodes because it’s easier to key in. But for added security, you can use a combination of letters, numbers, symbols and special characters as your lockscreen password.
Here’s how to enable it.
Lockscreen Security
To enable lockscreen security, go to Settings and tap on General, then tap on Passcode Lock.
Lockscreen Security Settings
Now, determine if you want a 4-digit or a complicated combination of characters as your passcode. If you want a 4-digit passcode, then turn on Simple Passcode; if not, turn it off and tap on Turn Passcode On.
Enable Lockscreen Security
Set your passcode with the on-screen number pad or keyboard. Once you’ve keyed it in twice, your iPhone is secured with the Passcode.
You can then tweak the settings in ‘Require Passcode‘ whether you want the passcode to be entered every time the screen is unlocked or only after it has been locked for a preset amount of time, e.g. if you set it at 1 min, if you lock and unlock your phone under a minute, the phone will not ask for a passcode.
Lockscreen Security
You can also choose to enable Erase Data which clears all the data from your device if there are more than 10 failed passcode tries (we advise against this if you have a child at home who has access to your phone).

How To Restart An Unresponsive IDevice

If you happen to download a poorly made app, which caused your iOS device to become unresponsive, you can do a force restart to make it work again. To do this, all you have to do is hold down the home and power button at the same time. Hold it until the Apple logo appears on screen then let go. Your device will start up.
iPhone Reboot

How To Take Screenshots

Taking a screenshot on iDevices is easy. All you have to do is hold the power button on the top and quickly press the home button in the middle. Your screen will flash white confirming that you’ve taken the screenshot, which is saved into your Photos app.
iPhone Screenshot

Sharing Via Email

You can also send photos and videos in your phone via email but take note that the iPhone willlower the quality of your files so that the attachment is not too big. This is useful at times, for a speedier attachment, but if you want the photos of the best quality and resolution then take these steps.
Tap on Edit and select either one or more picture files. Now tap on Share and select Copy.
Share Step 1
Then go to the Mail app. When you compose a new mail, select Paste on the body of the email. This way all the high resolution photos and videos will be attached. You can then add your usual text and send it away.
Share Step 2
